Gloss or matte carbon: which finish should you choose?

Gloss carbon has a deep, wet-look clear coat that makes the weave pop and matches most aftermarket gloss carbon parts. Matte carbon has a satin, low-glare finish that hides fingerprints better and sits closer to the open-pore look of BMW's own carbon interior trim. Both use the same real carbon and the same OEM fitment.

Installation

The cover replaces the factory part and uses the same mounting points. Remove the T8 Torx screw at the base of the selector, unclip the factory cover with a plastic trim tool, transfer the gear position indicator to the new cover, then clip it in and refit the screw. Most owners finish in 15–30 minutes. No cutting, drilling or coding is required.

Frequently asked questions

Does it fit manual or automatic (Steptronic) BMWs?

No. It is shaped for the F-generation M-DCT gear selector only. Manual cars and 8-speed automatic models use a different selector.

Is it real carbon fiber?

Yes. It is real 3K 2x2 twill carbon fiber over a rigid ABS core, finished in a UV-resistant gloss or matte clear coat. It is not a vinyl wrap, hydro-dip or carbon-look print.

Is it a stick-on overlay or a replacement?

A replacement. Your factory cover comes off and this one fits in its place using the original clips and screw, so there is nothing to peel or lift over time.

Will Park, Drivelogic and the gear display still work?

Yes. It is a trim-only upgrade. You reuse the factory gear position indicator, and all selector functions work exactly as before. No coding is needed.

What is the difference between gloss and matte?

Only the clear coat. Gloss is shiny and high-contrast; matte is satin and low-glare. Material, fit and installation are identical.

Does it fit the G80 M3, G82 M4 or G87 M2?

No. The G-generation M cars use a completely different gear selector.
